Description
Filled with greenery, Calomini is located on a hill not far from Vergemoli, in a sunnier position and sheltered from the weather.
It was founded around 1100, and its greatest development came a few centuries later when, thanks to its strategic location it was the center of the interests of the local lords.
The village church is dedicated to St. Thomas, while there is also another religious building of considerable interest, the small church dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows.
The most important attraction remains, however, the Hermitage of Calomini.
The etymology of Calomini may go back to the Latin "callis minor," probably referring to the smaller size of the mountain where the village stands. As evidence of the presence of early human settlements, dating back to prehistoric times, remains from the Copper and Bronze Ages have been found in two different caves in the area.
The first finds were discovered in 1977 in the cave called "Buca delle Fate" near Calomini, this is a small Eneolithic burial cave, inside which human bones belonging to at least 28 individuals were found.
